NA deputies bear responsibility for sustainable growth

National Assembly deputies must be aware of their roles in and responsibilities for sustainable growth, said the top legislator.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the point while addressing the opening ceremony of the conference on the National Assembly and sustainable development goals (SDGs) on December 17 in Da Nang.
The event drew the attendance of NA Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam, and UN Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam Kamal Malhotra.
The 2030 Agenda is a 15-year global framework centered on an ambitious set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 targets and over 230 indicators. The 2030 Agenda envisions a secure world free of poverty and hunger, with full and productive employment, access to quality education and universal health coverage, the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, and an end to environmental degradation.
To fulfill the goals, the participation of the National Assembly, NA deputies, and deputies of People’s Councils at all levels is of great significance especially in perfecting the legal system; supervising implementation; and budget allocation.
According to Ms. Ngan, over the past 15 years, the Vietnamese NA has built and perfected important legal framework in favor of sustainable growth including over 300 laws and introduction of the 2013 Constitution. The NA also passed the National Strategy on Environmental Protection by 2020 with a vision towards 2030; the Resolution on sustainable poverty reduction by 2020; and the National Strategy on sustainable development goals.
In addition, the NA supervised the State’s activities in fulfillment of sustainable growth goals; reviewed and gave comments on budget allocation to the national target program on climate change and medical investment in localities.
The NA also contributed to promoting Viet Nam’s accomplishment of MDGs by verifying and ratifying Viet Nam’s participation in international accords and agreements in human rights.
The top legislator stressed that in the coming time, it is necessary to raise awareness for deputies about their roles, obligations, and responsibility for SDGs and apply the tools to assess implementation of sustainable development goals./.

Economic growth must go hand in hand with environmental protection and prioritise the needs of disadvantaged groups.
Sustainable development is a common mission for different sectors in the country that requires clear responsibility assignments, close collaboration and transparency.
It stresses the importance of involving the public in hitting Việt Nam’s sustainable development targets, including the Government, bilateral and multilateral development partners, the private sector, as well as the foreign and local political, professional and mass organisations and other groups.
Achieving the sustainable development targets would help Việt Nam take a big leap in reducing poverty, ensuring social security, protecting the environment and responding to climate change.
The country will focus on perfecting institutions and policies, increasing public awareness of sustainable development, enhancing high-quality human resources development, and mobilising internal and external financial sources in order to reach those targets.
