President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc said it is necessary to change the methods history is taught at schools and in the community to help each citizen clearly understand their origins, national traditions, and historical values at a meeting with the Vietnam Association of Historical Sciences in Hà Nội on Friday.
He stressed that understanding national history is deeply important to the course of construction and protection.
He asked ministries and agencies to discuss and find the best solutions to deal with current debates relating to history teaching, paying attention to the role and position of the subject.
The President said the State should have different support methods to ensure the efficiency and encourage the research, teaching, and learning of history.
He noted that the young generations have not been interested in learning history because there is a lack of effective and attractive teaching methods and good historical stories and movies. He proposed the Vietnam Association of Historical Sciences continue making specific recommendations to State agencies to deal with the issue.
In the future, the association needed to focus on researching not only Vietnamese history but also regional and global history and set a vision to become a prestigious historical research centre of the region and the world, building strong research groups with research projects on a national and regional scale.
He also asked the association to enhance international cooperation and exchanges, honouring historical scientists who made great contributions and have more prizes in history to encourage the study, teaching, and learning of history at schools and in society.
On this occasion, the President praised experts, scientists, and historians who have made great contributions to the development of the historical sector and the national construction and protection.
The association has made many valuable historical scientific contributions, helping the development of the country's history, the President said, adding that its prestige was set up and keeps improving.
Many Vietnamese historians were highly appreciated and honoured by the international community. The Party and State have granted the association many awards in recognition of their achievements and contributions.
The Party and State attach great importance to the national history in association with preserving historical heritages and projects, including historical research and education, President Phúc said.
He proposed the association continue to make more contributions to the construction of national policies, guidelines, and ideology./.

Studying history helps us understand and grapple with complex questions and dilemmas by examining how the past has shaped (and continues to shape) global, national, and local relationships between societies and people.
Because history gives us the tools to analyze and explain problems in the past, it positions us to see patterns that might otherwise be invisible in the present – thus providing a crucial perspective for understanding (and solving!) current and future problems.
Everything we do, everything we use, everything else we study is the product of a complex set of causes, ideas, and practices. Even the material we learn in other courses has important historical elements – whether because our understanding of a topic changed over time or because the discipline takes a historical perspective. There is nothing that cannot become grist for the historian’s mill.
I agree that history must be compulsory subject in the high school!
History is one of the most respected and most valuable academic subjects your child will learn.
Developing your knowledge of history means developing your knowledge of all these different aspects of life. Children can learn about the pillars upon which different civilizations were built, including cultures and people different from their own.
There are lessons, both good and bad, to be learned from the way our ancestors have interacted with other people who have different ways of living.
Nations are made up of a collection of stories and legends. These stories shape the way we think about our country and our standing within it. History is where we learn about how great institutions are formed, and how they’ve contributed to where we are today.
Finding who we are and what mark we can make on the world is a huge part of childhood. Allowing children to learn about the identity of their country is one way of facilitating that.
Those historical stories can also serve to inspire individuals to greatness. History remembers brilliant people and their heroic acts that have changed the shape of nations. You get a huge amount of motivation from learning about the inspirational events that make up where we are today.
The past is filled with warning signs. We must be able to reflect on the events that built up to them, learn from mistakes made and resist and question if we see similar patterns emerging.
If your child studies history, they will be able to identify when society is going down perilous routes and contribute towards getting it back on track.
History is the knowledge of and study of the past. It is the story of the past and a form of collective memory. History is the story of who we are, where we come from, and can potentially reveal where we are headed.
History is important to study because it is essential for all of us in understanding ourselves and the world around us.
We study history because history doesn’t stay behind us. Studying history helps us understand how events in the past made things the way they are today.
Historical knowledge is no more and no less than carefully and critically constructed collective memory.
History isn’t just an essential introduction to your own country, ethnic heritage, and ancestry. It’s also a valuable tool when it comes to understanding those who are different from us. Global, national, and regional history books help us understand how other cultures affect our own.
Studying history can shed light on human behavior throughout time and help explain what’s consistent and what seems to be more dependent on context.
Understanding history and what drives change helps protect people from conspiracy theories, which tend to spread faster during stressful, chaotic times. When unchecked, belief in conspiracy theories can have tragic consequences and lead to real-world violence.
History is important to identity. Nations have holidays recognizing big historical events and figures. The stories people tell shape their view of their cultural or national identity, informing how they behave in the present. Leaders understand how important history is and will reference it whenever they believe it will inspire people.
