Vietnam respects, ensures right to freedom of religion

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son has asserted the Vietnamese Party and State’s consistent policy of respecting and guaranteeing the right to freedom of religion for all people and ensuring equality among religions.

Mr. Son made that statement at his reception for Holy See’s Apostolic Nuncio to Singapore cum Non-residential Pontifical Representative to Viet Nam Archbishop Marek Zalewski.
The Deputy Minister acknowledged the contributions of Vietnamese Catholic citizens to the nation’s socio-economic development, highlighting recent progress made in Viet Nam’s relations with the Holy See.
He expressed his hope that Archbishop Zalewski will help the Viet Nam Catholic Church implement the Pope’s teachings.
Archbishop Zalewski expressed thanks to Viet Nam’s authorities for creating favorable conditions for his first visit to Viet Nam, confirming that he and the Holy See at large will do their utmost to promote bilateral ties, encouraging the Vietnamese Catholic community to contribute to the nation’s development.
Archbishop Zalewski is scheduled to pay a courtesy visit to the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, attend Mass, and meet bishops at Ha Noi’s St Joseph’s Cathedral during his working visit to Viet Nam from September 9-15.

Vietnam has continuously revamped the related legal system and policies, particularly the adoption of the Law on Belief and Religion and ordinances to guide law enforcement.
Belief and religious practices of people have been ensured and thousands of religious events and festivals are held annually.
It is clearly stated in the 2013 Constitution and laws and are guaranteed and respected in reality.
Although the International Religious Freedom Report from 2017 has mentioned certain progress in promoting belief and religion in Vietnam, it still consists of biased assessment and quotes misinformation on Vietnam.
Together with achievements gained during the renewal process of the country, belief and religious life have changed dramatically and the right to freedom of belief and religion has been better assured in Vietnam.
Freedom of belief and religion is one of the fundamental human rights, recognized by international laws on human rights and the laws of many countries in the world.
Our Party’s and State’s consistent policy is to respect and ensure the right to freedom of belief and religion of the people.
This right is clearly stated in guidelines, viewpoints, the Constitution, laws, which ensure its implementation in reality.
Belief and religion are the demand of part of the population and will survive with the nation during the cause of building Socialism in Vietnam.
In recent years, activities to ensure the right to freedom of belief and religion in Vietnam have gained remarkable achievements, and are praised by the international community.
For the first time in the history of the laws on belief and religion in Vietnam, the law regulates that detainees or imprisoned are eligible to use bibles or religious documents should they so wish.
It is obvious that the religious life in Vietnam develops together with the development of the nation.

I hope the Vietnam Fatherland Front will cooperate with Religions for Peace International to foster links between religions in Vietnam and others in Southeast Asia.
