Vietnam’s priority is to reduce poverty

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has reaffirmed the Vietnamese Party and State’s special attention to poverty reduction, adding that one fifth of the annual budget is being spent on the efforts.
The head of government was speaking at a programme held on October 17 to call on the whole nation to join hands in support of the poor.
He said the national target programme on sustainable poverty reduction has been carried out effectively, helping to improve the people’s living standards, especially in ethnic minority, mountainous, severely disadvantaged and disaster-hit areas.
The PM added that Vietnam’s poverty rate under the multi-dimensional approach is expected to drop from approximately 10% in 2015 to about 4% by the end of 2019.
Speaking at the programme, President of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front (VFF) Tran Thanh Man said that over the past three years, more than VND9,000 trillion (US$387 million) has been raised to provide for the poor.
At this year’s edition, individuals and organisations have donated VND900 billion (US$38.7 million).
He told the audience at the programme, which was broadcast live on national TV, that such funds have helped many poor households to escape poverty in a sustainable manner and helped poor regions to build better communities.
The VFF president stated that the national fund for the poor plans to build 1,000 houses for poor people in a number of border, mountainous and disaster-prone provinces; and to support poor students’ continued schooling and provide support to poor households in the upcoming Lunar New Year.
He called on Vietnamese people both at home and abroad, entrepreneurs, good Samaritans and international organisations to continue supporting Vietnamese people.
On the occasion, the organisers launched a messaging programme to support poor people, with each message contributing at least VND20,000 to the national fund for the poor.
Earlier, the VFF and the Steering Committee for National Target Programmes jointly held a ceremony to receive donations from ministries, agencies, the armed forces, enterprises, and domestic and international organisations.
In a number of provinces, such as An Giang and Quang Binh, similar programmes were also held to call for financial donations for the poor.

Poverty reduction in Viet Nam: Outstanding achievements and solutions to overcome limitations in the near future
Hunger eradication and poverty reduction have always been among the key tasks of the Party and State in all periods.
Poverty reduction has engaged the whole political system to comprehensively support the poor, especially those in the poorest regions, and the region of ethnic minorities.
Over the past years, though achievements have been made in hunger eradication and poverty reduction in Viet Nam, limitations remain. Synchronous solutions must be taken to effectively overcome these restrictions in the near future.
Before 2000, hunger eradication and poverty reduction focused on delivery of food and foodstuff
Poverty reduction is carried out simultaneously at all levels.
Poor people and families have been supported to develop production.
Policies on assistance to the poor in education, training and vocational training have boost the proportion of poor children go to school at the right age

Viet Nam was completed ahead of time the Millennium Development Goals “reducing by half the number of extremely poor people worldwide by 2015” and was recognized by the international community as a good example in the fight against hunger and poverty.
The life of the poor people has been gradually improved
Integrate multidimensional poverty reduction targets into annual and five-year socio-economic development programs and plans.
One aspect of the Sustainable Poverty Reduction in Vietnam is vocational education and training
ethnic minority groups have experienced a much slower pace of poverty reduction compared to the majority of Viet Nam’s population.
Progress in reducing poverty among ethnic minority people in dimensions other than income, such as education, health, housing, sanitation and water also lag behind the national average.
The poverty reduction in Vietnam is also attracting other nations to open up their markets to Vietnam.
The globalization of Vietnam’s economy may further expand job opportunities and continue to improve the standard of living.
Vietnam’s innovative approach proves a success story.As 2020 approaches, poverty reduction in Vietnam continues as the country takes great measures and strides toward becoming a developed nation.
