Vietnam plays marked role in defining regional peace, cooperation
As the Chair of
ASEAN in 2020, Vietnam has played and will play a significant
role in defining the region’s desire for peace and cooperation, according to an
analyst from a US university.
In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency, Professor Surupa Gupta from the
faculty of Political Science and International Affairs at the University of
Mary Washington said the country has affirmed the importance of cooperation in
seeking peaceful solutions to disputes in the East Sea.
She said Vietnam has done well in controlling COVID-19 and
supported other countries and territories by providing resources such as
medical equipment.
As the ASEAN Chair, she went on, Vietnam has used its own experience to focus
on a number of issues, including the building of the bloc’s identity and
connectivity in response to global and regional challenges such as COVID-19.
Vietnam has also concentrated on creating an active form of intra-bloc backing
to deal with regional and international issues as well as protect the interests
of ASEAN, the region, and the international community.
As such, the bloc has continued to be built based on intra-bloc solidarity and economic
integration.
As for the ASEAN-US
strategic partnership, which passed the half-decade mark this year,
the professor said that under Vietnam’s chairmanship, the two sides have forged
engagement in health and human resources development. The US values ASEAN’s
role and wants to step up cooperation with both the bloc and Vietnam, she
added.
Existing ties have made substantial contributions to peace and sustainable
development in the Indo-Pacific region, with parties sharing the common goal of
fighting terrorism and pirates.
ASEAN is now the US’s fourth-largest trade partner, she said, while noting that
both sides believe in the value of respecting territorial integrity and
sovereignty and the rule of law. The US recognises ASEAN’s central role in
handling regional issues, while both sides value transparency, good management,
comprehensiveness, and openness, which are important to improving trade and
investment in the region.
A review of policies issued by different administrations in the US, she said,
shows that no matter who leads the nation, relations with ASEAN are respected
and prioritised. She also expressed her hope that ties will continue to thrive
in the time to come./.

For ASEAN, accepting Vietnam as its seventh member helped speed up the expansion of the bloc to all the 10 regional countries, thus consolidating peace and stability in a region that has special geo-political and geo-economic importance as a centre for links between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Today, ASEAN is considered a success model in regional cooperation. ASEAN-led forums have drawn many countries and been valued by all world powers.
ASEAN has proactively expanded its relations with partners and become an important partner of major countries inside and outside the region.
Vietnam has integrated more confidently, proactively and actively ever since, and continuously promoted its role as a reliable partner and a responsible member of the ASEAN Community in particular and the international community in general.
Vietnam’s integration and participation in ASEAN were closely associated with the country’s renewal and international integration.
Vietnam has made great strides forward in changing its ways of thinking for diplomacy, from the one of “more friends, less enemies”, diversification and multi-lateralisation of international relations, and “shifting from confrontation to dialogues” into that of becoming a proactive, active and responsible member in ASEAN, and now that of proactively, actively and responsibly joining other ASEAN countries to build a strong community.
Vietnam has gradually affirmed itself as an integral part of ASEAN and the Southeast Asian region, attached its development with ASEAN, and wished to shoulder the bloc’s common work.
With important initiatives and contributions made, such as expanding the EAS and establishing the ADMM+ mechanism, Vietnam has actively worked with other member states to maintain the central role of ASEAN in the emerging regional architecture.
The country has spared no efforts in fulfilling its role as the ASEAN Chair 2020.
Vietnam has set up strategic partnership and comprehensive partnership frameworks with neighbouring and regional countries, powers, and other important partners.
Vietnam’s rising role in ASEAN has helped it win international support for the safeguard of its security and development interests, including the East Sea issue.
Integrating into ASEAN helped Vietnam gradually raise its multilateral diplomacy and position in the world.
As the ASEAN Chair 2020, Vietnam, together with other member states, has defined the common theme for the year as “Cohesive and Responsive” so as to push ahead with progress in building the ASEAN Community and promoting the role of ASEAN in a changing world.
Vietnam’s efforts as the ASEAN Chair have demonstrated its cohesive and responsive spirit.
Prime Minister Phuc stressed the need to give priority to meeting people’s interests and building a people-centered ASEAN. He also emphasized the necessity for ASEAN reforms and measures to better its operations and improve the effectiveness of cooperation with its partners.
Vietnam’s viewpoint is in line with the bloc’s principle stance on the East Sea affirmed at the 36th ASEAN Summit in June and the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in September as well as the 37th ASEAN Summit, in order to build the East Sea into a sea of peace, stability and cooperation.
The greatest success of ASEAN is to create a peaceful and stable environment in the region.
Việt Nam believes that all countries have common duties and interests in respecting the fundamental principles of international law.
Việt Nam stands ready to resolve disputes with parties concerned through negotiations as well as other peaceful measures, including those specified in the UNCLOS.
Việt Nam is ready to partner with the international community to combat this in any form!
