24/5/15
Secretary General Ban Ki Moon meeting with the President of Vietnam Assembly, Nguyen Sinh Hung
Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has spoke of
Vietnam’s responsible efforts and contributions at UN forums, including
the country’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council during
2014-2016 and peace-keeping operations.
He had
talks with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham
Binh Minh in Hanoi on May 23, during which they agreed to further boost
cooperation between the UN and Vietnam.
They
emphasised the importance and necessity of adopting a post-2015
Development Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals in September, and
reaching a new international agreement on climate change response in
December this year.
As one of developing countries
affected most by climate change, particularly rising sea level, Vietnam
has been active in carrying out drastic measures to cope with the
phenomenon, Minh stated.
He also appreciated the
UN’s assistance for Vietnam, especially through the implementation of
the “Delivering as One” initiative and the construction of the “One UN
House” in Vietnam.
Regarding recent developments and
tensions in the East Sea, the Deputy PM asked the United Nations to
continue keeping a close watch on the issue and urging the parties
concerned to address disputes by peaceful means in line with
international law.
The Secretary General expressed his concern
about the increasing tensions in the East Sea, affirming that the UN is
willing to boost the settlement of the disputes by peaceful measures.
He also expressed his hope that ASEAN and China soon conclude negotiations on a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
After the meeting, both host and guest attended an inaugural ceremony
of the “One UN House” and a conference reviewing one year since Vietnam
participated in UN peace-keeping missions.-VNA
