Vietnam's Plan to enhance UN peacekeeping operations

Vietnam will continue to seek measures to enhance the efficiency of and expand the areas of engagement in UN peacekeeping operations.

Vietnam is also training 259 sappers for the future engagement in peacekeeping operations at an appropriate time.

Vietnam’s involvement in UN peacekeeping missions has helped promoting defence cooperation between the country and partners, enhancing its position and prestige in the regional and global arena, and contributing to Vietnam’s success in running for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure.

Nations should share experiences and sought measures to further increase the efficiency of Vietnam’s engagement in UN peacekeeping operations in the future.

Along with the maintaining of operations of a level-2 field hospitals in South Sudan and officers in other positions, Vietnam will seek opportunities to deploy the sapper force.

While considering the possibility of expanding its engagement in other operation areas such as military police, infantry guards and transport helicopters, while continuing to send officers to take part in contests for commanding positions at missions and UN agencies.

The Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations will give more advice to the Central Military Commission and leaders of the Ministry of National Defence as well as the steering committee on measures to protect the safety of Vietnamese officers amidst COVID-19 pandemic.

Vietnam will strive to develop the department into a centre for the enhancement of peacekeeping capacity in the region and the world.

Vietnam will continue to actively contribute to the activities of the United Nations Missions.

Vietnam officially joined UN peacekeeping operations and dispatched representatives to the UNMISS in 2014. The country has deployed a level-2 field hospital in Bentiu, South Sudan, since 2018, and is preparing for the deployment of a third hospital.

Vietnam successfully fulfilled its commitments and responsibilities in the UN Security Council (UNSC) during the first year of its two-year term as a non-permanent member, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN.

Vietnam's missions will concentrate on ensuring security and safety, promoting mutual support while performing their tasks, strengthening international solidarity, and maintaining absolute safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

the pandemic is still ravaging many countries and may affect peacekeeping operations, but expressed his belief that the three officers will complete all assigned tasks.

Vietnam has made every effort to optimise the interests of the country at the global forum, protecting its security interests and development and improving its position and prestige.

The country has ensured safety and contributed to enhancing the image and profile of Vietnam and its military in the international arena.

In its six years of involvement in UN peacekeeping operations, Vietnam has sent 53 military officers to South Sudan and the Central African Republic, including four women.

There have also been 126 Vietnamese officers and doctors joining Field Hospitals No 1 and 2 in South Sudan, including 20 women.

Vietnam has joined efforts with other countries in the E10 group to strengthen intra-group solidarity and the solidarity between the two groups, contributing to enhancing links, promoting information sharing and joint action, and improving mutual support in many issues, including how to respond to climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Notably, Vietnam has been active in promoting the role and voice of ASEAN as well as of the E10 in 2020 - a special year when two ASEAN members - Vietnam and Indonesia - are non-permanent members of the UNSC.
