The Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS)’s chapter in Hanoi will strive to provide support for 7,000-10,000 disadvantaged people under the 2019 Humanitarian Month which was launched in the capital city on May 5.

The launch of the month, themed “Connecting, Sharing, and Spreading”, is part of activities to mark the Red Cross and Red Crescent Day (May 8).

At the launching ceremony, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Ngo Van Quy affirmed that Hanoi always attaches much importance to social welfare work, and taking care of the policy beneficiary families, as well as impoverished and vulnerable people inside and outside the city.

He particularly hailed the contributions made by the VRSC’s Hanoi chapter to the building of houses for people who rendered services to the nation, and poor households in 2017 and 2018.

He took the occasion to ask competent authorities to pay more attention to the humanitarian work, and create favourable conditions for the operation of the VRSC at all levels.

At the ceremony, the VRSC’s Hanoi chapter received more than 15.3 billion VND (661,600 USD) donated by benefactors, enterprises and businessmen to help the needy.

An SMS campaign was also launched at the event to mobilise financial sources to support the poor in border areas.

Meanwhile, The 2019 Month for Humanitarian Activities has been launched in the central province of Ha Tinh. After the launching ceremony, the provincial chapter of the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC) coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Ha Tinh to organise a voluntary blood donation day, attracting a large number of local youths. As many as over 300 units of blood were collected during the day.

According to the VRC chapter in Ha Tinh, the province has 26,000 disadvantaged households, nearly 25,000 near-poor households, over 7,400 Agent Orange/dioxin victim, and thousands of disable children, blind people and those with heart-related diseases.
