Vietnam and Human Rights progress

7/2/14
Representatives from foreign countries congratulate Viet Nam on its election to the Human Rights Council for the first time on November 12, 2013

On February 5, Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on the situation of human rights in Vietnam was carried out at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland that Vietnam, a brandnew member got the highest result of 184 approval votes of the 192  among 14 supplementary elected countries on November 12, 2013.

The recognition of the international community for Vietnam's achievements in better ensuring rights of all people in the fields of politics, society, economy, culture, education, religious beliefs. In most frameworks for both bilateral and multilateral dialogue and cooperation on human rights, every countries and international partner highly appreciate Vietnam’s  achievements, especially in the field of poverty alleviation, food security, social security and the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) implementation in a good way.
Vietnam has completed about 90% of the targets of the MDGs which is pre-term meeting or exceeding five of eight goals and it will be able to be basically achieved all the other goals in 2015. Vietnam also joined the UN Convention Against Torture. Speed of Internet development in Vietnam reaches the highest rank in the world and Internet usage in excess of the world's average level. Vietnam Constitutional Amendment received over 26 million views and opinions, which was approved by 98 % votes in Congress on November 28, 2013 that all is a confirmation of elevating human rights institutions in Vietnam.
To ensure human rights in all countries must though a process. Vietnam has improved it gradually to comply with the UN Convention on the Rights of  Persons, considering human rights as a universal value while also paying attention to the specific characteristics of each nationality,  region and to the circumstances of history, culture, religions.
Reality shows that any country has human rights issues addressed such as differentiation between the rich and poor, inequality and corruption. Although a nation solves well the human rights issue, it still be scavenged and criticized by outside factors. Similarly, Vietnam is always imposed unilateral and subjective views by a number of organizations and individuals because of unfriendly political motivations. They usually give misinformation or garbled and misunderstanding information, even they slander Vietnam based on anecdotal evidence and extremely recommend the human rights situation... So enhancing dialogue and providing fully the right information at the same time recommending and impementing the necessary issues within the framework of international human rights commitments and norms have become the motto of general behavior in an complex international and regional context.
The results of the second UPR session will help Vietnam, a member of Human Rights Council in contributing constructively, directly and responsibly to protect and promote human rights values across the world as well as share and learn best practices from international partners to ensure the better enjoyment of the rights of every Vietnamese.
