Some thoughts due to Thai political crisis

Thai people in Shutdown Bangkok protests

Not until this crisis, we have realized the negative side of Thai democratic politics. When Thai former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, an experienced politician, was topple in a 2006 coup and forced to live in self-imposed exile to avoid being imprisoned on a corruption conviction, Thai politics has showed its instability. Since the 1930s, Thailand has experienced 17 military coups as well as abundance of political unrest. This number is extremely high in comparision with any other nation in the world, and even experts on international affairs are fed up with continuous political crises in Thailand. And, since the military ousted Thaksin in 2006, Thailand has been wracked by repeated boust of unrest. The crisis boiled over again late last year after a failed ruling party bid to push through an amnesty bill that would have allowed Thaksin to return from exile. Once again, the question of democratic crisis is raised whether political unrest is consequence of excessive democracy, in which, Thailand is always known as one of the most democratic country in Southeast Asia and in the world. Let see what democracy brings for Thailand! Now, it is a fact that not many countries where people are fond of protesting like Thailand, from the red shirts, the yellow shirts to white shirts, from the anti-government protests to pro-government ones. Thai people hold protests like festivals on the streets. Since the latest wave protests started in November, 2013, at least nine people have been killed and more than 500 have been injured. It’s not sure that those protests could make Thailand more democratic, but it’s clear that they have brought serious damages to Thai economy, especially services and tourism.
Amid political crisis in Thailand, let take a look at Vietnam – a country which is judged with a lot of condemnations on implementing democracy and human rights, after 30 years of reforming from wars, Vietnam now has a fast developing economy and a stable politics, which is one of the most in the region. In Vietnam, except for festivals and traffic jam, it’s hardly seen a progressive protest on the street. Vietnam’s security forces seem leisured and do not have to use strong measures to crack down protests. Here, people just focus on their business. Political life is so peace and stable. Despite that somewhere people still complain about few problems, it’s just matter with local authorities and some irresponsible corrupted officials. To central government, especially to the Vietnamese Communist Party, which has led the country through many victories in the wars with the US and French colonies and continued to lead the Reform today, people still put strong faith. Vietnamese politics with the principle of presentative democracy through the National Assembly helps people practice their rights and responsibilities toward the nation. Therefore, every state policy and Party’s guideline always get attention and support from the people. Every policy presents the people’s hopes and spirits for national interests.
So, many can say Thailand is more developed and democratic than Vietnam, and Vietnam may take 50 years or more to keep up with Thailand. But, at present, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra must want a stable politics like Vietnam’s. And who knows? In the future, with the advantages of a stable politics, Vietnam will develop fastly and soon we will catch up with Thailand to be a leading nation in the region.

Apparently, a stable and secure politics will bring many advantages for Vietnam's economy. And, I believe that in the next 20 years, Vietnam will be a leading country in the region.

Yeah, especially in Vietnam we don't have to worry about a bomb blast or a shooting in public. You can go out and enjoy life in a secure and friendly society.

I guarantee that Thailand will continue be torn apart by violent protests if they still persistently maintain such political system which they consider "democratic"!

Don't be so optimistic! Vietnam should ask why it has a political stability but still a developing country. Vietnam has a lot of things to do.

About political stability, Vietnam is the best!

All comparisions are just reference. But, I admit that for the stability of political system, Vietnam's authority has done very good their jobs. Hopefully, that will make Vietnam's economy develop as Thailand's.

Political stability is an obvious evidence and symbol of democracy!

"Thai people hold protests like festivals" I like that comparison, I don't see any chance that picture could happen in Vietnam.

I like to travel and enjoy tourism services in Thailand, but prefer to live in Vietnam.

I agree with Hoàng Lân, we'll wait to see how far this crisis go.

It's said that Thailand is more democratic than Vietnam, but look what democracy brings for Thai people: protests, chaos, injury and damages to economy.
