Vietnam well prepared for non-permanent seat at UN Security Council

Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani has spoken highly of Vietnam’s preparation to run for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC).
During an interview granted to correspondents of the Vietnam News Agency, the diplomat also shared his country’s experience in undertaking the role as the non-permanent member of the UNSC, and pointed to challenges that will face Vietnam in the work.
A session of the UN General Assembly will hold a vote on June 7 for five non-permanent member positions of the UNSC, including one for the group of Asian-Pacific nations - which Vietnam is representing.
Dian said Vietnam has well prepared in recent months, predicting that the country will not face any problem in the upcoming vote.
Member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have also greatly supported Vietnam because the bloc also wants its member countries to be present in the council.
If Vietnam wins the election, it will have only six months to get a thorough grasp of procedures and regulations of the council in order to well assume its position in the next two years, he said, stressing that careful preparation for this is very important and necessary.
He expressed his belief that if Vietnam is elected, it would do well its responsibilities at the UN Security Council.
The diplomat emphasized that Vietnam will contribute greatly to the council because it is very reliable, and works on principles.
Vietnam has sent personnel to UN peacekeeping forces and there are many other areas in which the country can contribute when becoming a non-permanent member of the Security Council, he noted.
As Indonesia was the rotary president of the UN Security Council in May, the ambassador also shared experiences in coordinating cooperation with other members of the council which have different viewpoints, especially the five permanent members, to maintain unity within the organisation./.

Việt Nam has been nominated by Asia-Pacific countries in the UN as the only candidate from the region for the seat.
The UN Security Council’s voting procedure stipulates that non-permanent members must be elected by a two-thirds majority. Given the level of support already expressed, Việt Nam has a big opportunity to be successful in the poll.
It is important to encourage all countries to join the vote and support Việt Nam at the UN General Assembly’s 73rd session on June 7.
Regarding the urgent tasks Việt Nam must complete if it wins the election, the diplomat said the country will have six months for preparations as it would assume the position of UN Security Council Chair in January 2020.
The first point of order if Việt Nam wins the election would be to consolidate the organisational apparatus at the permanent Vietnamese mission to the UN.
The second step would be to prepare ideas on issues that Việt Nam will pursue in areas of international concern that conform with the council’s functions and duties.
If elected to the council, Vietnam will have more opportunities to make greater contributions to the UN.
Implementing an external policy of multilateralisation and diversification of international relations and being a friend to all countries, Vietnam has made use of UN forums to expand its bilateral and multilateral ties with other nations and international organisations.
Vietnam implemented a foreign policy of peace and made contributions to addressing world conflicts and crisis while backing peaceful negotiations and restriction of sanctions, based on international law and principles of the UN Charter.
Vietnam actively got involved in all matters and in all stages of work in the council, through making speeches, joining in negotiations, contributing to the drafting of resolutions and documents, and serving as chair and vice chair of some subcommittees of the council. It chaired the negotiations and compilation of the council’s resolution on women and security peace.
As a representative of Asia, Vietnam pushed the peaceful settlement of regional issues as well as well matters in other regions like Africa and the Middle East.
The country is able to flexibly handle its relations with powerful countries and those with common interests and traditional relations based on respecting and protecting the legitimate interests of stakeholders.
Vietnam’s activities at this important multilateral cooperation mechanism have helped enhance the country’s image and promote its bilateral relations with foreign partners.
Vietnam’s running for the position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure comes from the country’s desire to be a responsible member of the international community and make more contributions to peace, development and prosperity in the world.
