Việt Nam spotlights women’s role in peacebuilding, reconstruction, development

Women should be empowered to meet their own needs, helping themselves, their families, and communities.

I call for gender mainstreaming in policies and programmes on mitigation of natural disasters, climate and environment.

We have seen many achievements of the Vietnam Women's Union in the struggle for national independence and reunification and the cause of national construction and integration.

Generations of Vietnamese women will continue to create their dreams, overcome difficulties to contribute and affirm their values in society.

We need to enhance issues such as safety for women and children; economic empowerment for women; enhancing the cultural and spiritual life; joining hands to overcome natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic; digital transformation and the application of scientific and technological advances in the union’s activities.

Let's head towards a future with equality, integration and development, adaptation and flexible response in many contexts.

It is necessary to mobilise the engagement of domestic and foreign experts and local residents during the reviewing process.

The reviewing work should not be limited in evaluating the outcomes and pointing out reasons, but it should also focus on defining new viewpoints and targets so as to propose suitable solutions, thus contributing to building theoretical foundation in the work.

Due to inadequate awareness of the gender role and inequality access to resources, women and girls are the most vulnerable during natural disasters.

The role and contributions of women have yet been recognised, that the mobilisation of equal engagement of men and women is crucial in ensuring the effectiveness of natural disaster prevention and control activities, strengthening the resilience of the whole community.

It aims to highlight the role of women in the fight against natural disasters and climate change.

We must promote the role of women in natural disaster prevention and control, it is necessary to create more spaces or give more support to women so that they can make more contributions to the work.

Vietnam has set up a solid legal framework conducive to gender equality, she said, stressing the significance of the Gender Equality Law, the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control, and the National Strategy for Gender Equality (2021-2030).

Over the past years, Vietnam has shown strong commitments and efforts to improve the status of the women in all spheres, including the political.

We need to emphasise that Vietnam is now 4.7 percent higher than the global average of 25.5 percent of female parliamentarians, moving Vietnam from the 65th to the 54th in the global ranking.

It is a remarkable achievement of the country in promoting gender equality and in the empowerment of women through the increase of women’s participation in parliament.

Regarding economic development, women have made a significant contribution to the economy since they constitute 47.7 percent of the labour force and make up 26.5 percent of the business owners and CEOs, much higher than the regional levels.

Women’s equal representation and meaningful participation in the leadership positions and decision-making at all levels, in both public and private sectors, are essential for Vietnam to realise inclusively and sustainably its socio-economic development vision, to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, and to “Leave No One Behind”.

Vietnam should sharpen focus on narrowing the gender pay gap and prevalence of violence against women and girls, adding that certain groups of women and girls are in need of specific attention such as ethnic minority people, those living with disabilities or HIV, in rural or natural disaster-prone areas, and migrant workers.
