Can not subjectively deduce from freedom of the press in Vietnam
31/3/14
Recently, Sai Gon Tiep Thi (Saigon Marketing) Newspaper directly under Investment
and Trade Promotion Center of Ho Chi Minh City has formally been withdrawn the
newspaper’s operating license by the Ministry of Information and Communications
due to financial difficulties including losses and much debt in extended time
that is known popularly in society. Yet, a number of foreign newspapers, radios
( RFA, BBC, VOA...) and many blogs deliberately released misinformation that
Sai Gon Tiep Thi newspaper was “driven to suicide” because there were many
articles touching “sensitive problems” and added the issue of press freedom in Vietnam
are being violated. This is the beginning of a campaign to narrow the Vietnam
press system in 2020 under the project proposed by the Ministry of Information
and Communications .
It must be said immediately that Sai Gon Tiep Thi newspaper was revoked
operating license due to the request of its governing body when suffering
losses, but absolutely for any other “sensitive reason”. Until before the license
was revoked , Sai Gon Tiep Thi had been in financial debt amounted to 50
billion VND, the revenue monthly still not enough to pay the bank interest
rates. In fact, not only in Vietnam
but also foreign countries, if a newspaper is not enough competitive or can not
financially afford, it will obvious be suspended the publication and
disseminetion. This is nothing to debate. No one “suicided” this newspaper.
Speaking newspaper was “driven to suicide” is a subjective and unfounded
interpretation!
In Vietnam,
each newspaper has own objects and goals, acting in the areas registered. Sai
Gon Tiep Thi newspaper as well as all
the other press agencies must follow principles and purposes stated in the
license. Contrary to principles and purposes is illegal. It can be due to
informational competition or a “vague reputation” to issue articles contrary to
the policies and viewpoints of the Party which harm our national security and
interests ... That all newspaper must understand and comply with.
On the other hand, with information on the Project of Planning Nationwide Newspapers
System in 2020, some people have subjectively deduced from press freedom in Vietnam
is entirely baseless. The reality of developing press system over time shows
that, beside the important achievements and significant contribution of the
press to the renovation and construction of national defense, meeting the
increasing demanded information of the people, the press system also has
exposed some shortcomings. Many of these newspapers and magazines declined in
the political, cultural, scientific
quality and professional quality of the information. Many newspapers has signs
to diverge from principles and purposes, giving sensational information to
attract readers. The information content of the report is akin to one another
leading to bore and a waste of money. Press system in Vietnam has significantly grown in
quantity but the quality is not equivalent, overlapping with principles,
purpose, content, served objects... Therefore, the adjustment and
reconstruction the press system is a high demand, consistent with the real
situation of the country, ensuring better performance for press in accordance
wwith the right principles and purposes within the legal framework. This is a
necessary move towards a reasonable number of press agencies and publications,
enhancing quality to serve better the information needs of readers and the
entire society. Rearranging to make chances for press to develop deeply,
promoting the advantages and overcome deficiencies, performing better functions
and work tasks. Therefore, it is subjective deduction when saying that press
freedom in Vietnam
is entirely stunted.
The matter regarding Sai Gon Tiep Thi Newspaper has demonstrated that hostile
forces and the opportunists take advantage of any problems, phenomena in the
social of our country to distort the situation, inciting public opinion,
containing guidelines and policies of the Party and the State. However, the
truth is always the truth, no one can change “black to white”, only that anyone
receiving this type of deduced information should be vigilant.

Each newspaper has legal status, operating under the laws and regulations of the state. If the newspaper does not guarantee operating conditions, the operation is suspended.
The following state is quite right that the truth is always the truth, no one can change “black to white”, only that anyone receiving this type of deduced information should be vigilant.
The hostile forces one again use democracy and human rights rhetoric to distort and slander the situation in Vietnam.
The State of Vietnam resolutely handle newspaper which do not follow the principles and operational purposes is very serious, so then people can have access to clear information.
I see that press works very messily today. Beside a number of mainstream newspapers have good content, promoting social development, the majority of remaining ones contain useless information.
Readers read newspapers without conscious selection will not know wherether the information is right or wrong. If a newspapers givea misinformation, that will be suitable To withdraw its operating lisence.
The Ministry of Information and Communication withdrew SGTT newspaper's operating licenses due to itself proposal, like the foreign company filed for bankruptcy alone, nothing to be noisy.
It is clear arguement of those allegations against Vietnam.
The project of planning nationalwide newspapers system like other projects to restructure other sectors of society to go make activities in our society more efficient. Why do they say that the freedom of the press in Vietnam are being violated?
Hung Quan says quite exactly!
