In challenges, VN has kept ASEAN on the right track

As the Chair of ASEAN 2020, Viet Nam has kept ASEAN on the right track by taking anti-COVID-19 cooperation and recovery as a “flag” to gather intra-bloc solidarity and consensus of the bloc’s partners, and using digital platforms to maintain cooperation activities amid difficulties posed by the pandemic.

The event was chaired by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of Viet Nam’s ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) and General Secretary of the National ASEAN 2020 Committee.

The aforementioned statement was reached by delegates during a high-level roundtable reviewing Viet Nam’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2020 in Ha Noi on December 17.

It also featured the participation of former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan and representatives of ministries and sectors involved in ASEAN cooperation. ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi, senior officials from ASEAN member states and partners, representatives of international organizations, regional and international scholars and researchers participated in the seminar virtually.

In their remarks, delegates agreed that 2020 is an important milestone in ASEAN’s development process with the prominent role of Viet Nam as Chair of ASEAN 2020.

Praising the positive success from Viet Nam’s ASEAN 2020 chairmanship, they said Viet Nam has shown flexibility, creativity and proactiveness, and promoted its core role in ASEAN, step by step guiding the bloc to sail through difficulties and successfully implement the “dual” goal of maintaining community building momentum and strengthening intra-bloc solidarity and improving ASEAN’s responsiveness.

Participants highlighted the role of Viet Nam as ASEAN Chair in mobilizing efforts of the whole Community to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and promote comprehensive recovery in the region.

The Viet Nam-proposed initiatives such as the ASEAN COVID-19 Response Fund, the ASEAN Regional Reserve of Medical Supplies, the ASEAN Strategic Framework for Public Health Emergencies and the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework, have been supported and highly appreciated by ASEAN member countries, they stated.

Delegates underscored that the encouraging results of ASEAN in 2020 have partly demonstrated the bloc’s vitality, dynamism, resilience, balance and proactive adaptation capacity.

They stressed the need to step up efforts to fight COVID-19, promote recovery and care for the people, and fully and effectively implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.

They expressed their hope that ASEAN will promote its role to contribute to global efforts in maintaining peace, security, stability and sustainable development, as well as effectively responding to challenges and making firm steps forward on the path ahead.
