Global summit of women parliament speakers opens

The 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament opened in Abu Dhabi, the
capital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 12 with the
participation of 50 female parliamentarians.
Speaking at the event, Speaker of
the UAE Federal National Council A. Al Qubaisi said the event brings together
leaders of parliament, ministers, scientists in the private sector and
community leaders.
She hailed top female
legislators’ important role in shaping their future and protecting the interest
of the people and future generations.
Al Qubaisi also called for joint
actions to address challenges involving protectionism and globalisation and
affirmed that the summit reflects confidence in achieving set visions.
President of the
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) S. Chowdhury recalled that the first summit of
this kind was held in 2005 with 19 delegates taking part, adding that female
parliamentarians contribute to policymaking to change the world.
He asked for thorough
preparations to coordinate efforts against world challenges such as poverty
reduction, anti-terrorism and many other important issues.
At the opening session,
participants listened to a message of United Nations Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon, and speeches delivered by UAE Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of
Interior Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed
El-Tayeb, which highlighted the role of women in the world’s people-elected
bodies in improving people’s lives, promoting fairness and issuing policies for
sustainable development.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is scheduled to present speeches at thematic sessions.
The summit, which will run until
December 13, aims to promote female participation in politics and prevent
violence against women and children.
Themed “United for Shaping the
Future”, this year’s event will discuss the role of women parliament speakers
in addressing challenges to social progress and prosperity./.
