Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha
Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, along with a high-level delegation of senior
officials from the Royal Government of Cambodia, arrived in Hanoi on December
20 to kick-start his two-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of
his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

The visit is an important event, affirming that Vietnam and
Cambodia both equally value and pay attention to promoting relations of “good
neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive, sustainable and
long-term cooperation” between the two countries to an increasingly intensive
and effective extent in the context of the new international situation.
The Kingdom of Cambodia is located on the southwestern part of
the Indochinese Peninsula, with an area of 181,035 km2 and a population of over 15.5 million people, of which
about 90% are ethnically Khmer and about 80% live in rural areas, as well as
a per capita income of over US$1,228 in 2015.
Under the wise leadership of King Norodom Sihamoni, the
National Assembly, the Senate and the Royal Government of Cambodia with the
Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) at its core, the country has made achievements
in all areas in the course of its construction and development, continuing to
maintain peace, stability and growth. Cambodia’s economy has prospered.
Since 2012, Cambodia has achieved an average GDP growth rate
of 7% a year. Agriculture, textiles, tourism and construction are the main
pillars of its economy, of which the tourism industry has seen explosive
growth. In 2015, Cambodia welcomed 5 million foreign tourists and it is
striving to receive from 7.5-8 million international arrivals by 2020,
contributing to a national budget over US$5 billion and creating more than 1
million jobs. Cambodia currently has trade relations with 150 countries and
territories around the world, with its main export markets being the US, the
European Union, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
The country and its people are moving towards elections for
commune councils in 2017 and for members to the Sixth National Assembly in
2018.
Both located on the Indochinese Peninsula, Vietnam and
Cambodia share a long historic traditional relationship. The two countries
share more than 1,000km of borders throughout ten Vietnamese provinces and
nine Cambodian provinces.
In recent years, relations between Vietnam and Cambodia have
been constantly promoted by their leaders and peoples under the motto of
“good neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive, sustainable
and long-term cooperation,” bringing practical benefits to the two peoples.
The two sides maintain high-level visits and exchanges at all levels,
strengthening the trust between the leaders and peoples of both countries and
promoting bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
Bilateral cooperation on defence and security is implemented
according to the agreements signed by the two parties, continuing to be a
pillar for bilateral relations and an important contribution to the
enhancement of mutual trust, thereby creating a favourable environment for
the development of both countries.
Both sides are striving to complete the demarcation of their
land border in the shortest time possible to develop a border of peace,
stability, cooperation and sustainable development. Economic cooperation,
trade and investment are increasingly focused on and have achieved positive
results.
Vietnam is currently the third-largest trade partner and the
fifth-largest investor in Cambodia. Bilateral trade reached US$3.37 billion
in 2015. Tourism cooperation has seen significant growth, as 2015 saw the
number of visitors from Vietnam to Cambodia reach approximately 1 million,
while the number in the reverse direction reached 210,000.
Cooperation between relevant ministries, branches, localities
and mass organisations of the two sides also recorded strong development
through exchanges of delegations, mutual assistance on economic development,
strengthened cultural exchanges and cooperation in healthcare and peoples’
exchanges, contributing to the maintenance and protection of borders of
peace, stability, friendship and cooperation.
Vietnam and Cambodia are close neighbours in ASEAN, having
coordinated and cooperated in international and regional forums. They are
striving to build an ASEAN Community of solidarity, cooperation and
prosperity.
During PM Hun Sen’s official visit to Vietnam, leaders from
the two sides will discuss measures to promote all aspects of the relations
between Vietnam and Cambodia, especially in the field of core pillars and in
areas of great potential. The two sides will also exchange views on
strengthening cooperation and mutual support in international forums and
organisations.
The visit’s results will contribute to further strengthening
the political trust, traditional friendly relations and comprehensive
cooperation between the two countries, meeting the interests of the two
peoples for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and
around the world.
