Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong launched the New Year Tree Planting Festival in Viet Cuong commune, Tran Yen district, the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai on February 10 (the sixth day of Lunar New Year 2019).
On November 28, 1959, President Ho Chi Minh wrote an article which was published on Nhan dan (People) newspaper, stressing the significance of tree planting to each person, each family and the entire nation. It has since become an annual Vietnamese custom each Lunar New Year.
Addressing at the ceremony, the Party and State leader underlined that tree plantation has played an important role in preventing natural disasters, improving quality of the environment, and bettering local livelihoods amidst global warming, climate change and sea level rise, which are billed as one of the formidable challenges to the human beings in the 21st century.
He called upon the entire Party, army and people to engage in growing trees and forests as well as taking actions against deforestation as part of efforts to protect the environment.
According to Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong, the country planted more than 231,000 hectares of concentrated forest and over 63 million scattered trees in 2018, raising the forest coverage to 41.65 percent. Meanwhile, the export of forestry products was estimated at more than 9.3 billion USD.
The forestry sector’s achievements contributed greatly to the national socio-economic development in the year, he added.
In accordance with the Target Programme on Sustainable Forestry Development for 2016-2020, competent agencies and sectors will work to raise forestry production value by 6 percent annually, as well as forestry export to 10.5 billion USD and forest coverage to 41.85 percent in 2019.
In Yen Bai province, noticeable changes were seen in forestry production, with additional 15,443 hectares of forest and the forest coverage reaching 63 percent.
Following the launching ceremony, Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong met, delivered Tet greetings and presented gifts to local ethnic people.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 9 (the 5th of the first lunar month) offered incense at a Hanoi ceremony to celebrate the 230th Dong Da victory against the Qing invaders.
On behalf of the Hanoi Party Committee, People’s Committee and people, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung recalled the resounding victory by King Quang Trung 230 years ago in the then Thang Long capital (now Hanoi). That year has gone down to the history of the Vietnamese nation and the heart of the people, the official stressed.
Dong Da mound in Hanoi’s inner district of the same name, where corpses of Qing invaders were buried, stands as a symbol of the long-lasting tradition of patriotism of the Vietnamese people, and the Prime Minister issued a decision on December 4, 2018, recognizing it as a special national relic. At this year’s ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc handed a certificate on this effect to representatives of the city and the district.
A day earlier, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh also offered incense in commemoration of King Quang Trung and his soldiers in the central province of Binh Dinh, which is the cradle of the movement against the Qing invaders.
Meanwhile, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh beat the drum and offered incense at the opening of the Hai Ba Trung (Trung Sisters) Temple Festival in Hanoi’s outlying district of Me Linh on February 10 (the sixth day of the Lunar New Year).
The festival was also meant to mark the 1979th anniversary of Hai Ba Trung Uprising at the Hai Ba Trung Temple, a special national relic site.
On the sixth day of the second lunar month in 40 AD, the Trung Sisters led a mass uprising against the Han invaders to reclaim national independence after more than 200 years of foreign rule.
After defeating the invaders, Trung Trac became King. Three years later, the Han army returned and defeated the Trung Sisters and their army, after which the sisters killed themselves by jumping into the Hat Giang River.
The uprising has gone down in Vietnamese history as a demonstration of the nation's strength and patriotism, as well as the crucial role of Vietnamese women in national construction and defence.
On February 9, 2018, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism signed a decision recognising the festival as a national intangible cultural heritage.
On the occasion, the organising board also held an exhibition featuring contributions by generations of Vietnamese women to national development.
Vice President Thinh later attended the launch of a tree planting ceremony in Me Linh district and also planted a tree at the campus of the district People’s Committee./.
