Socio-economic development disparity among ethnic minorities

The World Bank (WB) in Vietnam and the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) held a workshop in Hanoi on May 21 to announce the research results on factors affecting the socio-economic development of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam.
According to the study, infrastructure and economic connectivity, as well as market linkages and opportunities to join the labour market are the main factors that enable certain ethnic minority groups to obtain a higher level of development than others.
Other factors include the availability of means of production, access to education and healthcare services, traditional institutions and local governance, gender relationships, ethnic conceptions, and the ability to access external support.
The research also suggested some useful policies with focus on investment in supporting production and building capacity, accessing the labour market, empowering women in conducting business, and reducing prejudice and social discrimination.
Minister and Chairman of the CEMA Do Van Chien highly appreciated the prompt support of the WB and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam in coordinating with the committee to make in-depth research on factors that directly affect the socio-economic life of ethnic minority groups.
The information and analysis results of the research are very useful for ethnic policy making and management, especially when the CEMA is entrusted by the Government to coordinate with relevant ministries and departments to elaborate an overall scheme on socio-economic development amongst ethnic minorities, and mountainous and disadvantaged regions post-2020.
Ousmane Dione, Director of the World Bank in Vietnam, said that from this research, there are many opportunities to further improve the agenda to increase social integration by actively adopting a new approach to the development of ethnic minority areas.
Vietnam can count on the support of the World Bank to integrate this programme into transport and infrastructure investment projects in rural and mountainous areas, as well as diversify agriculture and implement national target programmes, he added./.

The government has launched a project on boosting the application of information technology to support socio-economic development and security in areas inhabited by ethnic minority groups during 2019-2025.
The whole society and the ethnic groups will continue joining hands together and support each other to overcome all difficulties.
Digital technology will be used to preserve the fine cultural heritage of ethnic minority groups, with the goal of 80 percent of information on traditional ethnic festivals and customs digitalized.
We need to narrow this gap, to help ethnic people have chance to develop!
One important task set by the project is to build a database on ethnic minority groups focusing on their history, culture, festivals and customs, traditional products and geography of their residential areas.
The Party and State have urged ministries, sectors, and armed forces to strengthen their ties with the prestigious people in ethnic communities.
The country need to continue encouraging villagers to engage in protecting the border security, building new-style rural areas, and getting rid of outdated customs.
This research help us recognize what we have achieved and what not in promoting ethnic minorities' development.
Boosting ethnic livings is boosting human rights among minority groups.
Over the past years, the Party and State have done many policies to develop ethnic people's livings and gain many successes.
All society must join hands to help enhance ethnic people's socio-economic development.
Vietnam has achieved many MDGs and we will gain more in protecting and promoting minority groups' livings.
