The Ministry of Natural Resources and
Environment (MONRE) has asked other ministries, agencies and localities
to take action in response to World
Wetlands Day (February 2).
In a document issued on January 18, the MONRE ordered stepping up the
communications work to raise public awareness of the significance of wetlands,
and called for efforts in preserving and using wetlands sustainably.
It also suggested integrating wetland preservation into programmes, planning
schemes and development projects.
World Wetlands Day 2021 highlights the contribution of wetlands to the quantity
and quality of freshwater on the planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an
inseparable co-existence that is vital to life, human wellbeing and the health
of the planet.
The campaign is also an occasion to commemorate the signing of the Ramsar
Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971.
The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty that provides the framework
for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. It aims to
stem the progressive encroachment on and loss of wetlands at present as well as
in the future.
As the first Southeast Asian nation to become a member of the Ramsar Convention
in 1989, Vietnam has
rolled out various activities to protect and use wetlands wisely, and built a
legal corridor on wetland management.
So far, nine wetlands in the country have been recognised as Ramsar sites –
wetlands of international importance – namely Xuan Thuy National Park, Bau Sau
Wetlands and Seasonal Floodplains, Ba Be National Park, Tram Chim National
Park, Mui Ca Mau National Park, Con Dao National Park, Lang Sen Wetlands
Reserve, U Minh Thuong National Park, and Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve./.

World Environment Day 2020 took the theme "Action for Nature" this year, marking an important milestone for countries to commit to the conservation of nature and biodiversity.
The Vietnamese Government has committed to joining hands with governments in the region and the world to reduce biodiversity loss by 2030 for sustainable development.
Need to emphasize on the importance of cooperation within the bloc as well as with countries and development partners to realise targets in the ASEAN cooperation strategy on the environment, the action plan of the ASEAN working group on nature preservation and biodiversity, and other regional initiatives.
It has become a widespread movement nationwide, contributing to raising public awareness of the protection of the environment, biodiversity, water resources, sustainable development and climate change.
Vietnam has signed various international treaties on biodiversity, like the Ramsar Convention, the CITES treaty, the Climate Change Convention, and the UN’s Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Vietnam is now one of the 16 countries globally with the highest range of biodiversity. Currently the country is home to 173 protected areas covering more than 2,500 ha, including 33 national parks, 66 nature reserves, 18 habitats and species management areas, and 56 protected landscape areas.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment should prepare a national action strategy on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the 2020-2030 period.
Nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history. Biodiversity loss coupled with climate change is threatening the world’s sustainable development.
A number of protected nature areas have won international recognition, including nine world biosphere areas sprawling over 4.2 million ha, two UNESCO-recognised world nature heritage sites, nine Ramsar sites covering more than 120,000ha, and 10 marine protected areas of nearly 188,000ha.
In recent years, special attention has been paid to protecting wild species, contributing to preventing the trade and consumption of endangered species and protecting biodiversity of Vietnam and the world.
We need the communications campaigns will target people nationwide, especially the youths and those easily accessing modern technology and actively changing for a better life.
