As a member of the United Nations, Viet Nam affirms its strong commitment to contribute to multilateral endeavors, global solidarity and partnership to achieve the ultimate goals of sustainable peace and development.

Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son made the above statement on May 7 while attending a high-level videoconference briefing on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Upholding multilateralism and the United Nations-centered international system” under the chair of Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi.

In his remarks, Bui said multilateral cooperation plays a significant role in handling with global challenges including arms race, terrorism, trans-national crimes, climate change and the complex development of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He called on the international community to abide the UN Charters and oppose power politics, coercive actions and use of forces in the international relations.

The Vietnamese diplomat stressed the need to strengthen coordination between the UN and regional organizations in promoting the spirit and key outcomes of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) high-level open debate chaired by Vietnamese State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc in April 2021.

Bui also highlighted ASEAN's centrality and efforts in addressing international and regional issues, calling on multilateral institutions, including the UNSC, to be further reformed so that they can function in an ever more effective, and responsive manner and adapt to the evolving international environment./.
