Viet Nam remains consistent with policy on freedom of religion and belief
Viet Nam always respects and consistently implements a policy of ensuring citizens’ right to freedom of religion and belief and to follow or not follow a religion, guarantees equality and non-discrimination based on religion or belief, and protects operations of religious organizations in line with the law, the Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang has said.
During the ministry’s regular press conference in Ha Noi on May 13, Hang affirmed that Viet Nam acknowledges the U.S. Secretary of State’s International Religious Freedom Report 2020, which mentions the country’s efforts in ensuring and promoting religion and belief.
However, she said the report contains non-objective opinions based on incorrect information on the situation in Viet Nam, adding that the nation's efforts and achievements in ensuring citizens’ right to freedom of religion and belief have been widely welcomed by the international community.
It always stands ready to engage in straightforward and open discussions with the U.S. in a constructive spirit on issues where the two sides still have differences, to increase mutual understanding and contribute to the development of the bilateral comprehensive partnership, the spokeswoman said.
Asked to comment on the recent escalating conflict in the Gaza Strip, Hang said Viet Nam has kept a close watch and is deeply concerned about escalating violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories over recent days that have killed and injured civilians.
Viet Nam called on all parties concerned to exercise restraint, end the escalation of tensions, and deal with the conflict via peaceful measures, thus ensuring the safety and legitimate interests of people.
Regarding the East Jerusalem issue, she affirmed Viet Nam’s consistent stance that every solution needs to observe international law, especially relevant UN resolutions./.

Viet Nam’s constant policy is respecting and observing citizens’ rights to belief and religious and non-belief and non-religious freedom.
This has been stipulated in the country's Constitution and legal system and we consistently strive to make sure it is respected in reality
The Vietnamese State has carried out numerous policies and specific measures towards ensuring citizens’ full rights to belief and religious freedom.
Vietnam’s policy consistently respects and ensures citizens' freedom of belief and religion.
Vietnam has continuously fined-tuned the related legal system and policies, particularly the approval of the Law on Belief and Religion and ordinances to guide law enforcement.
Belief and religious practices of people have been ensured and thousands of religious events and festivals are held annually.
Although the International Religious Freedom Report has mentioned progress in promoting belief and religion in Vietnam, it still consists of biased comments and quotes misinformation on Vietnam.
Such regulations are stipulated in the Constitution and Vietnam continues completing the legal framework to make policies on beliefs fully realized in reality
Vietnam has 24.3 million or 27% of population is categorized as religious believers, which does not include persons professing some kind of religious or spiritual beliefs. The community of religious followers includes 53,000 dignataries, 134,000 ministers, and 28,000 worship places.
Current regulations in force in Vietnam state that forcing others to follow, or renounce, a religion or belief is prohibited.
This is clearly stated in Vietnam’s Constitution and legal system as well as guaranteed in practice
Vietnam has made continuous efforts to perfect its legal system and policies on religion and belief, including approval of the Law on Belief and Religion and decrees guiding its implementation
Many major international religious events have been held in the country
There remain inaccurate and unverified information in the report about the situation in Vietnam
Vietnam continues to maintain and stands ready to enhance cooperation and have discussions with the US on issues of shared concern in a spirit of frankness, openness, and mutual respect, through bilateral dialogue frameworks, including annual human rights dialogue, thus contributing to promoting the comprehensive partnership between the two countries
The right to freedom of religion and belief in Vietnam is not just in theory. When there is no pandemic, more than 8,500 religious festivals are held in Vietnam every year.
Religious rituals and ceremonies draw hundreds of thousands of religious followers. Religious activities are practiced nationwide.
The State has recognized and licensed the operation of 41 religious organizations adhering to 16 religions and thousands of smaller religious groups have a license to operate.
Vietnam has participated in dialogues on democracy, human rights, and religion with the US and the EU, and successfully defended its National Report on the 3rd Universal Periodical Report and its National Report on implementing the International Convention on political civil rights at the UN Human Rights Council.
The Vietnamese Party and State has consistently pursued a policy of respecting and protecting the right to freedom of religion and belief, ensuring equality of religions, and promoting the cultural and moral value of religion and its contribution to national development.
