A new bright future for ASEAN

The day of November 22nd 2015 will be marked in the history of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Because on this day, leaders of the 10 ASEAN member countries signed the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Establishment of the ASEAN Community at the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With this “birth certificate”, a new bright future is opening up to each ASEAN member state as well as whole region.
The Declaration on the ASEAN Community establishment on December 31st 2015 is the result of the tireless effort and trying of the ASEAN. Looking back the 50-year history of the ASEAN, we could understand the important meaning of the Community to the ASEAN. For 50 year after the World War II, the Southeast Asia region had been in hostility and suspicion. The region, which reflected the international political confront of the Cold War, had been split up into two opposite groups. In 1990s, the world situation had been changed dramatically, the ASEAN countries had realized the urgent need to have peace, stability and mutual trust, if not the region would be left behind and become undeveloped. Therefore, all Southeast Asia countries had determined to build a strong ASEAN bloc including 10 members, creating new impulse for each state to develop. With this strategic vision, each ASEAN member state had achieved a lot of successes, contributing to build the dynamic, open and potential ASEAN.
Nowadays, the ASEAN is not only a potential market but also an important political entity on the global arena. Starting from a loosely cooperative association, the ASEAN has grown up strongly to become a community that is united and integrated, an important partner of powerful countries and organizations all over the world. Despite the state members are small countries, the ASEAN with its strategic opposition has wide relations with many countries, especially the big ones. The ASEAN’s principles such as non-interference in internal affairs, opposing the use or threat to use of force in international relations have been supported strongly by international community.
The signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the establishment of ASEAN Community is a milestone in the bloc’s history. Starting from the effort of “trying to renovate”, ASEAN know it cannot be satisfied with the achievement it has gained. Therefore, the leaders of ASEAN’s countries also signed the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2025 to realize a politically cohesive, economically integrated, socially responsible, and a truly people-oriented, people-centred and rules-based ASEAN.
The ASEAN Community is a community for the people, where people are ensured to pursue their happiness in their secure, safe and law-based countries. For each state and whole region, the Community will create the peaceful and stable environment, which is based on the rule of law, to develop.
The bright future for the ASEAN Community is visible, but it takes common efforts to overcome difficulties on the road to the future. The Southeast Asia itself contains many security threats which could harm not only the ASEAN Community but also the global interest such as the East Sea issue. Clearly realizing the responsibility to the region and the international community, in the ASEAN 2025, the leaders of the ASEAN had reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace, security and stability in the region, intensifying mutual trust and understanding, and exercising restraint in deploying activities in the area in conformity with principles of international law.
The signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN Community Establishment 2015 and the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2025: Forging together has put the ASEAN toward a new development stage, demanding the higher effort of each state member. The harmonization between national and regional interests, and the solidarity are indispensable requirements for the realization of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025./.
