Ensuring safety on each route
17/11/15
Traffic accidents are one of the major causes of death and disability
worldwide. Moreover, accidents can also slow down the process of economic development.
Since 1993, Peace Road has initiated the "World Day of Remembrance
of the victims of road traffic accidents." On October 27, 2005, the
General Assembly of the United Nations officially recognized and selected third
Sunday in November each year as "The World Day of Remembrance of the victims
of road traffic accidents" (it is also
known as the "World Day of Remembrance of the victims died from traffic
accidents") on a global scale. Since then, this day is celebrated in many
countries on all continents. It has become an important tool of the global
effort to improve traffic safety. This is an opportunity to attract the
attention of the public about the extent of the damage on both the spiritual
and economic causes of traffic accidents and to commemorate the victims of
traffic accidents. The "World Day of Remembrance of the victims died from
traffic accidents" this year was held on Sunday November 15, 2015 with the
message "To commemorate the dead - For people left".
According to the United Nations, each year about 1.3 million people die
and about 20-50 million people injured in traffic accidents. Traffic accidents on
roads are one of the major causes of death for people at the age from five to 44.
Besides, traffic accidents can slow down the process of human’s economic
development. For some countries with low or moderate incomes, losses caused by
traffic accidents even exceed the total amount of development aid they receive.
This is a burden for the economy of the countries directly affected by the health
services, rehabilitation services and other direct costs. Also, the traffic
accidents can also cause significant pressure for the affected families as they
face medical expenses and rehabilitation, funeral expenses and lost revenue which
they should have earned as well as misery and, emotional harm.
Traffic accidents are unexpected events, causing lasting psychological
trauma and the permanent consequences. Each year, millions of people were
injured or fell into mourning in every corner of the world.
Grief and anguish of those who suffer the consequences of traffic
accidents is very persistent and particularly more severe when the victim is
young people and many of the accidents that can be avoided.
Therefore, the international community spend a day commemorating the
victims of traffic accidents in order to ease the pain of loss of the victim;
listening and recording their thoughts and feelings.
The road traffic accidents can be avoided. In recent years, many
countries, particularly high-income countries have made significant progress in
reducing the number of deaths on the road. However, these positive employment
is still very limited in comparison with the sad reality still continuing for
hours every day on the planet.
In a message to be sent at the anniversary, the UN Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon emphasized: "World Day of Remembrance of the victims of road
traffic accidents" is the last time to think about unnecessary tragedies
occur every day on the roads of the world.
According to senior official of the United Nations, despite significant
improvements in road safety, we still face with many injuries and deaths which
are quite alarming.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the government to tighten the
enforcement of speeding, drink-driving, use of seat belts when driving cars,
wearing helmets when riding motorcycle and protective gear for children because
all these actions have been proven to be able to help saving lives.
More than ever in this significant celebration, the international community
should jointly commit to mobilize all efforts to make each route more safe and
bring peace and happiness to all people.
