UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres (R) receives Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations

The United Nations (UN) values Vietnam’s strong commitment to realising sustainable development goals (SDGs), adapting to climate change, protecting the environment and engaging more strongly in UN’s peacekeeping activities, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Guterres made the statement at a reception on June 12 for Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, who came to bid farewell at the end of her tenure.

Praising Vietnam’s active role in multilateral forums, the UN Secretary General noted that he and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a deep and comprehensive exchange on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada.

He said the two sides agreed on a number of important issues, including the need to abide by international law, strengthen multilateral cooperation, expressing his belief that Vietnam will promote its role and make further contributions to peace and development in the region and in the world.

The UN leader showed his pleasure at the good cooperation between Vietnam and the UN, saying that the Green One UN House model in Hanoi is a symbol of success, and a good experience for reforming the UN’s activities.

For her part, Nga thanked the Secretary General and UN’s agencies for their cooperation and effective support in recent time, stressing that the UN plays an important role in maintaining peace and stability; and promoting cooperation and development in the world.

She also reiterated Vietnam’s strong commitment to implementing the UN agenda, SDGs and coping with climate change, as well as to participating in peacekeeping operations and supporting efforts of the Secretary General to improve the efficiency and transparency of the UN.

Guterres wished Ambassador Nga new successes and hoped that she will continue her active contributions to strengthening cooperation between Vietnam and the UN.
