The nation has called on all relevant parties in Myanmar to show restraint and hold dialogues as a means of finding a satisfactory solution in accordance with Myanmar’s Constitution and law, whilst also meeting the will and aspirations of their people, thereby serving to facilitate the democratic process.
These were the points raised by a Vietnamese representative on March 10 during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The representative also underlined the need to end violence, stabilise the situation, and ensure safety for all civilians.
Furthermore, the country also informed participants on ongoing efforts by ASEAN to promote dialogues and find resolutions to the issue, adding that the bloc is willing to assist Myanmar in a goodwill manner and in accordance with the purposes and principles stated in the ASEAN Charter.
During the course of the meeting initiated by the UK, the UNSC expressed concern regarding violence in Myanmar, whilst also affirming its support for the democratic process and respect for fundamental freedom rights of the people, along with the rule of law.
Moreover, the UNSC also encouraged peaceful dialogues and mediations to be held in conformity with the will and benefits of local citizens.
The UNSC therefore strongly supports the role and efforts of ASEAN, along with its willingness to assist Myanmar, and the release of a statement by the ASEAN Chair. The statement recalls the purposes and principles of the ASEAN Charter, calling for restraint to be shown whilst seeking a peaceful resolution through constructive dialogues held between all parties and practical mediations.
The Council remains supportive of the mediatory role played the UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, recommending that the Envoy continues to keep in touch with stakeholders and pay a visit to Myanmar in the near future.
With regard to the humanitarian situation on the ground, the UNSC called on Myanmar to ensure safe and unhindered access to humanitarian relief, whilst voicing its concern that the situation may worsen challenges faced by people in Rakhine State. This includes the safe, voluntary, and sustainable repatriation of refugees in the area.
It also reaffirmed its support for the people of Myanmar and commitments to back sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity, and the unification of Myanmar./.
