The 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament opened in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 12 with the participation of 50 female parliamentarians.

Speaking at the event, Speaker of the UAE Federal National Council A. Al Qubaisi said the event brings together leaders of parliament, ministers, scientists in the private sector and community leaders.

She hailed top female legislators’ important role in shaping their future and protecting the interest of the people and future generations.

Al Qubaisi also called for joint actions to address challenges involving protectionism and globalisation and affirmed that the summit reflects confidence in achieving set visions.

President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) S. Chowdhury recalled that the first summit of this kind was held in 2005 with 19 delegates taking part, adding that female parliamentarians contribute to policymaking to change the world.

He asked for thorough preparations to coordinate efforts against world challenges such as poverty reduction, anti-terrorism and many other important issues.

At the opening session, participants listened to a message of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and speeches delivered by UAE Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Interior Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, which highlighted the role of women in the world’s people-elected bodies in improving people’s lives, promoting fairness and issuing policies for sustainable development.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is scheduled to present speeches at thematic sessions.

The summit, which will run until December 13, aims to promote female participation in politics and prevent violence against women and children.

Themed “United for Shaping the Future”, this year’s event will discuss the role of women parliament speakers in addressing challenges to social progress and prosperity./.
