Vietnam is the country of the year at the 27th international exhibition of environmental equipment, technologies and services (Pollutec 2016) that is being held in Lyon city, France.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha joined other delegates to cut the ribbon to open the event on November 29.

Organisers said Vietnam is chosen to be country of the year as it shows remarkable economic vigour and is one of the 11 countries with the greatest potential after the BRICS countries. It is also among the countries most vulnerable to climate risks such as rising sea levels, drought, and saltwater intrusion, especially in the Mekong Delta.

Opening the Vietnamese pavilion, Minister Ha said Pollutec 2016 is a chance to introduce Vietnam’s efforts in environmental protection, climate change response and sustainable development, along with the potential and favourable business climate for foreign investment in environmental protection in the country.

The event also offers an opportunity for Vietnam’s policy makers and businesses to enhance cooperation and exchange information and experience in managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and coping with climate change, he added.

The Vietnamese pavilion introduces some activities and technologies for sustainable development. Notably, a waste treatment solution of the Truong Van Dan company is selected as one of the 200 technological innovation initiatives of the exhibition.

Pollutec 2016, one of the world’s biggest environment and climate-themed exhibitions, features about 2,500 pavilions of regions and enterprises from 40 countries and territories.

Hundreds of events such as workshops, discussions and meetings will be held during the exhibition, which is expected to attract some 100,000 visitors until the closing day of December 2.

On November 29, Minister Ha met with Chairman of the French Environment and Energy Management Agency Bruno Lechevin, executives of some French enterprises, and representatives of Lyon city and Rhone-Alpes region.

He also engaged in a dialogue with French journalists to present Vietnam’s environment-related facts and policies on pollution prevention and climate change adaptation.

Many French businesses showed their interest in waste treatment and pollution prevention, saying that they will consider investment in Vietnam, especially in industrial waste and toxic chemical treatment./.

Vietnam must do more to protect environment, especially not allow investors who just care about their benefits and leave rubbish for our country.
