August Revolution and the renewal process

20/8/17
Seventy-two years ago, on August 19, 1945, under the leadership of the Party, the entire nation, with great determination, rose up in a revolt that overthrew feudalism and broke the chains of colonialist slavery, marking the dawn of a new era of national independence and socialism.
With that resounding victory, the Vietnamese working class and people and the working classes and oppressed nations around the world could be proud. It was the first time in the revolutionary history of the colonial and semi-colonial nations that a 15-year-old party with over 5,000 members successfully led a revolution to seize power, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) – the first ever people's democratic State in Southeast Asia.
This great event was a glorious milestone in the history of national construction and defence.
The great victory of the August Revolution was a victory of strength of national unity and the Vietnamese people’s patriotism, bravery, wisdom and will, which were inherited and promoted to new heights under the effective leadership of the Party. It was also the success of the appropriate revolutionary line, the wise leadership and strategic vision, as well as the acumen to seize opportunities and the art of combining national strength with the era's opportunities created by the Party and the great President Ho Chi Minh.
The rich reality of the Vietnamese revolution has proved that the Party's wise and ingenious leadership was the crucial factor in every victory of the Vietnamese revolution. Since the Communist Party of Vietnam was first formed (February 3, 1930), under the leadership of the Party, the country has won glorious victories, creating miracles throughout history: August Revolutionary in 1945, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945; Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954; the victory of the Ho Chi Minh campaign in Spring 1975 to achieve the liberation of the South and national reunification; the great achievements of the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, leading the country to overcome poverty and firmly enter the industrialisation and modernisation ages.
More than 70 years have passed, but the valuable lessons learnt from the August Revolution remain unchanged for the cause of national protection and construction, particularly the lesson of creating unity in the thoughts and actions of the entire Party, the people and the army to build the national unity bloc on the basis of a true political line and spirit of independence, self-reliance, and creation. The Party created absolute confidence in the ideals of national liberation and class liberation among the people, as well as making their members believe their sacrifice and disseminate their pure virtue to the masses.
Over the past 72 years, fulfilling the sacred oath made at the ceremony to declare independence, which stated that “the entire Vietnamese people are determined to mobilise all of their physical and mental strength, to sacrifice their lives and property in order to safeguard their freedom and independence”, the Vietnamese people have devoted their efforts and wisdom, as well as sacrificing their lives, to maintain the achievements and implement the lofty goals of the August Revolution: national independence and the people’s freedom and happiness.
From a slave state, Vietnam has become an independent country with sovereignty, unification and territorial integrity, constantly striving to build, develop, innovate and integrate into the international community. From a poor and backward country, which suffered from the heavy consequences of the wars, in addition to trade embargos, Vietnam has made efforts to eradicate hunger, reduce poverty, improve the lives of the people, accelerate the development of economies, culture and society, carry out the cause of industrialisation and modernisation, and actively integrate. The nation’s strength has been constantly increased, creating new positions and strength for the country to develop with worthy prospects. The great victories and achievements made by the Vietnamese people over the past 72 years have been appreciated and admired by our international friends, becoming a precious asset for the people during the process of strengthening industrialisation, modernisation and international integration.
In addition to providing opportunities and advantages, the international context and domestic situation have witnessed complicated developments. The peace and development cooperation are big trends, however latent unstable factors remain unpredictable. Hostile forces are drastically opposed to the country with a strategy of “peaceful evolution” and promotion of “self-evolution” and “self-transformation”. The four threats that the Party points out still exist at present.
More than ever, this situation requires the entire Party, people and army to unite and absolutely believe in the leadership of the Party, making effective use of the opportunities and advantages to overcome all difficulties and challenges. Fighting for the goal of national independence and socialism, the country continues to thoroughly grasp and focus on the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 12th National Party Congress. It is essential to enhance the building and rectification of the pure and strong Party; implement Resolution No.4 of the 11th and 12th Party Central Committee; strengthen the study of and adherence to the thought, morals and style of President Ho Chi Minh, in association with preventing any degradation in political ideology, ethics and lifestyle, as well as the manifestation of “self-evolution”, “self-transformation”, bureaucracy, corruption, wastefulness, sectarianism, and “group interests”; promote the nation’s strength and socialist democracy; comprehensively and synchronously accelerate the Doi Moi (Renewal) process; firmly safeguard the nation; strive to promptly turn the country into a modern – oriented industrial country.
On the occasion of 72nd anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2), being deeply aware of the greatness and significant historical meaning, as well as the lessons from the August Revolution, the Vietnamese people are proud of the great achievements and glorious victories over the past 72 years under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh.
The enthusiasm, spirit and lessons from the August Revolution are always a strength for the entire Party, people and army on the renewal journey for the sake of a prosperous people, strong country, democracy, justice and civilisation.
