Another false report about Vietnam’s human rights and religious freedom

13/3/15

It’s not the first time an international organization issuing false and unfair reports about Vietnam’s human rights and religious freedom. We have witnessed many organizations like UN Human rights Council, Human rights Watch, UN High Commissioner for Human rights, Freedom House… And, once again, in Geneva on 10-11 March, speaking at the 28th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief Heiner Bielefeldt presented his report on his mission to Vetnam from 21 – 31 July 2014. Whilst observing that “religious life and religious diversity in Vietnam are a reality in Vietnam today”, Mr. Bielefeldt identified many “serious problems”, and declared that “the scope of freedom of religion and belief remains extremely limited and unsafe” in Vietnam.
The UN expert expressed particular concern about the situation of Independent religious and belief communities – i.e. those unrecognized by the state. The autonomy and activities “remain restricted and unsafe, with the rights to freedom of religion or belief of such communities grossly violated in the face of constant surveillance, intimidation, harassment and persecution”.  He stressed that the conditions of independent and unregistered religious communities was a “litmus test for the development of freedom of religion of belief in Vietnam”.
It’s not clear Mr Heiner Bielefeldt based on what evidence to jump into conclusion like that, an incautious and irresponsible report. He forgot to see what Vietnam has done to guarantee and promote the rights to freedom of religions. Through all these years, our government has issued many religious policies to create a good conditions for many religions like Buddha, Christianity, Cao Dai, Hoa Hao… even Protestantism, which caused many problems for our security and social order. You must not forget what happened in the Central Highland in 2001 and 2004 which had caused many serious damages to our economy and stability. Now, some Protestantism elements still try to conduct activities against the State in a plot of establishing a so-called Degar state which surely just serves for their own benefits.
Other religious group like Lang Mai or The Unified Vietnam Buddhist Congregation which self-proclaim a Buddhist branch, but their main purpose is to undermine the State. They must remember that religions have to obey laws of states when they practice their belief. And, our country has our own laws for religions to develop in accordance with national interests.
There’s a truth that our government is committed to ensure and promote the rights to freedom of religions. Vietnam’s people are free to choose and follow their own religions, no one deter them. The government are trying to fulfill the law to protect these rights better day by day. So, if Heiner Bielefeldt and other individuals and organizations truly care about Vietnam’s rights of religious freedom, they first should gather and review adequate and rightful source of information about our real situation before officially announcing these statements.
We are very welcome and open to all constructive comments, advice and consultation from all friends, individuals and organizations, to create better conditions and environment for religions to practice and promote. So, thank you Heiner Bielefeldt, but we’re okay!./.

No one can deny a practical fact that human rights are a universal and global matter. However, human rights also have historical value which are associated with concrete historical conditions and situations in each nation and region in the world.

The Vietnamese people always affirm that national independence and socialism are the goal of the Vietnamese revolution. This goal is in line with the development trend of the era and the legitimate aspirations of the Vietnamese people.
