Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh’s arrest - Lesson for troublemakers

12/10/16

On Tuesday, the Vietnam’s authorities arrested Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, a 37 years old blogger, called Me Nam (Mushroom Mother), at home in Nha Trang province for conducting propaganda against the state under Article 88 of the Penal code. This is not a surprising news for ones who know clearly about this female blogger. In 2009, she was arrested, accused of violating article 258 of Vietnam’s Penal Code which prohibits abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interest of the state.
On her blog (http://menam0.multiply.com), which she writes under the pen name Me Nam or Mother Mushroom, Quynh groundlessly criticized the Vietnamese government’s handling of land and sea disputes with China. This is an issue which caused students to take to the streets in late 2007 and has been heavily discussed on Vietnamese blogs.
She also propagandized for criticisms on the Party and State of Vietnam about the highly controversial bauxite mining project in the Central Highlands which a Vietnamese state-owned firm is undertaking with the Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco). She incited people on blogs and took part in protests against the government.
Those documents which she stored and published prompted readers to misunderstand the nature of the issue, besmirches the reputation of the people’s police force, and damages the relationship between police and the people. Quynh admitted that she managed the blog and the Facebook page herself to spread hostile information that sabotaged the country’s interest and national security, abusing democratic rights, distorting facts and going against the government and the Party.
This time, she is accused of distorting the truth and spreading propaganda against the state. She unreasonably and wrongly criticized the government’s handling of a chemical dump at Formosa, a Taiwanese-owned steel plant, in central provinces of Vietnam that caused mass fish deaths. Not just publishing distorted stories and videos against the government and the Party, searching her house, police found a lot of materials which distort the truth, against the guidelines and policy of the party and the state. Along with many Facebook posts offered a pessimistic, one-sided view that caused public confusion and affected the people’s faith in the State.
Yes, it is believed to be among the worst environmental disasters in Vietnam’s modern history. And, while the government and people of Vietnam are trying to overcome this catastrophe, those bloggers like Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh have done nothing good but made the situation worse by criticizing and inciting people to aggressive activities.
But, who is Quynh to make judgements on these issues. Quynh is a co-founder of the Network of Vietnamese Bloggers, one of anti-State groups in Vietnam. They, of course, did not register for operation and conducted many activities against the people’s and country’s interests. All what she did is just sit tight and type whatever she could imagine to criticize the Vietnam’s government on her blogs. It’s not clear what her purposes for that, maybe either benefits or fame on reactionary fronts at home and abroad.
Her fellows like Pham Doan Trang, a dissident writer in Hanoi and also a member of the Network of Vietnamese Bloggers, praised Quynh as an online crusader — via Facebook and independent blogs — against corruption, social injustice and police brutality. In 2015, Quynh was even named civil rights defender of the year by Civil Rights Defenders, an group based in Stockholm.
It’s difficult to view what she did are for the people’s and country’s interests, those articles and posts she published just complicated the situation. Under Article 88 of the country's penal code, Quynh could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison. Those individuals like her should be warned and handled to keep the nation’s stability, every thing must be settled by the government and for the people’s sakes./.

These elements should be judged for what they have done to harm the country's interests.

She has been backed by foreign hostile forces for this kind of actions. Her arrest will ring a bell for her fellows and other axtreme bloggers.

Everyone should not be naive to trust this blogger and should understand why the police must arrest her, she deserves it.
