Vietnam contributes to protect the global environment

20/12/15
As a party of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Vietnam always expresses the commitment to support and accelerate the process of negotiations and reaching the global climate deal after 2020.
At the plenary of the 21st Conference of Parties of UNFCCC (COP21), which took place on November 30, at the Conference Center Le Bourget, Paris, France, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said:
“First, in the period from now to 2020, despite the difficulties in resources, Vietnam will continues to actively implement the strategies, programs, plans on adapting to climate change on various sectors, with effective measures; seriously fulfill the duties in the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol. Vietnam will contribute 1 millions USD to the Green Climate Fund in period of 2016-2020.
Second, after 2020, in spite of being a developing country and badly affected by climate change, Vietnam will commit to reduce 8% of the amount of the greenhouse gases in 2030 and even up to 25% if received the support from international community. Vietnam will review periodically to adjust properly with the real situation.
Beside the efforts of our own, we also call for the fairness between countries and in the content of slight reduction, adaptation, finance, development and technology transfer... The developed countries should take the lead in implement their commitments, also support and promote the developing countries’ capacity to successfully implement this agreement together.
We were glad to know that after two weeks of intense negotiations, finally, representatives of 195 countries in COP21 had officially adopted the Paris Agreement to control the global warming.
The adoption of the agreement has been an important break-through in the United Nations’ efforts for last two decades, persuading governments to cooperate in reducing the emission of pollutants and limiting the increase of the Earth’s temperature.
The agreement had shown that all countries of the COP21 had willingness, responsibility and international solidarity. They had also known how to turn the challenges to opportunities that helped bringing a important motivation for the fight against the climate change, avoiding the dangerous results caused by the global warming.
The agreement focuses on holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels; recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change. Developed and developing countries alike are required to limit their emissions to relatively safe levels, with regular reviews to ensure these commitments can be increased in line with scientific advice. Finance will be provided to poor nations to help them cut emissions and cope with the effects of extreme weather. Countries affected by climate-related disasters will gain urgent aid.
Like any international compromise, it is not perfect: the caps on emissions are still too loose, likely to lead to warming of 2.7 to 3C above pre-industrial levels, breaching the 2C threshold that scientists say is the limit of safety, beyond which the effects – droughts, floods, heatwaves and sea level rises – are likely to become catastrophic and irreversible. Poor countries are also concerned that the money provided to them will not be nearly enough to protect them. Not all of the agreement is legally binding, so future governments of the signatory countries could yet renege on their commitments.
Therefore, to successfully implement this agreement, developed countries not only have to take the lead in reducing the greenhouse gases emission, but also sponsor clean energy resource, renewable energy, capital, technology to help developing countries adapt with the climate change. This issue is “vital” to the southern hemisphere countries.
However, the fight is ahead, all countries have to seriously build and carry out policies to implement this agreement, reaching the goals and to be able to go beyond these goals./.

We have to pay attention to the exploitation of the natural resources, especially coal and oil.

all countries over the wworld are affected by climate change, so we should have responsibility to the globe’s climate change response

Vietnam committed to reduce 8% of the amount of the greenhouse gases in 2030 and even up to 25%, which shows it's responsibility

Funny Day 21/12/15 06:16

of course, Vietnam has to do that because it is one of countries that are most severely affected.

erica black 21/12/15 06:21

i don't agree with you. many countries such as China, the US are also countries most severely affected by the climate change, but these countries didn't wanted to much reduce the amount of the greenhouse gases because of their economic interests

Unknown 21/12/15 06:25

It can't be denied that Vietnam always shows as a responsible member in regional and international issues

Unknown 21/12/15 06:28

so right, that is one of main reasons which have leaded to Vietnam's increasingly high prestige in the international arena
