World Humanitarian Day: Inspire the humanitarian spirit
28/8/15
UN
General Assembly chose the day of 19th on August as The World
Humanitarian Day with the purpose of enhancing public understanding of the
activities conducted under the humanitarian assistance worldwide. The
anniversary in 2015 is to call for the world to inspire the spirit of humanity
in the community.
This
international anniversary has been selected by the event that happened 12 years
ago (August 19th 2003): The office of the United Nations in Iraq was
bombed, causing 22 deaths including Mr. Sergio Viera de Mello, the High
Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations and Special Representative
of the UN Secretary General in Iraq at that time.
The
World Humanitarian Day is an occasion to honor those who died or injured while
supporting those in need as well as those who are continuing to appease the
dolours and sharing difficulties with millions around the world. This
anniversary also attracts everyone to pay more attention to humanitarian needs
worldwide and the importance of international cooperation in responding to the
humanitarian needs.
Every
year, natural disasters cause enormous losses for millions of people - the
poorest in the world in general, especially the most disadvantaged and
vulnerable individuals.
Prior
to this sad reality, the humanitarian aid workers have been working hard every
day, every hour to provide urgent and long-term aid for the affected communities,
wherever they are in the world, regardless of nationality, social group,
religion, gender, ethnicity or any other factor. People must respect
humanitarian aid workers and they can reach the people who need to carry out
relief assistance.
