Positive signs of reducing mortality in children
29/9/15
According
to the latest report announced on September 9, 2015 by the UNICEF, the rate of
infant mortality in the world has been halved that allows saving 48 million
children under 5 years since 2000 - the year when governments committed to
implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
The
UNICEF report said 38 million people will be saved in the period from now until
2030 if improvements are made in correspond to the Millennium Development Goals
that world leaders attend to approve this month.
Number
of children died before the age of five mainly due to preventable causes. The
current number is around 5.9 million children each year, decreasing 53% in
comparison to 1990. On a global scale, annual reduction proportion of children
under age 5 died in the period from the year 2000 to 2015 has been more than
doubled in comparison with 1990.
According
to UNICEF, this significant progress is the result of the continuous efforts of
the leaders to develop a plan of action to combat infant mortality and to make
this issue become a political priority, thereby improving and building the
relevant data on child survival and expansion of proven effective interventions.
Typically
in some of the poorest countries in the world shows that it can significantly
reduce the mortality rate among children despite many not small obstacles.
Among
81 countries with low income or lower middle income, 24 countries including Cambodia,
Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Uganda have achieved the MDGs - reducing two third or
more the mortality in children under 5 years old.
In
the period since 2000 - 2015, 21 countries of the Sahara Africa have reversed
the trend of mortality increase or even a 3-fold increase the pace of progress
in this area in comparison with 1990.
"Millions
of lives in rural areas and cities or rich and poor countries is one of the
first major success of the new millennium. One of the biggest challenges of the
next 15 years is to continue accelerate this trend”, Ms. Yoka Brandt, Deputy
Director of UNICEF said. “At a theoretical level, we can save millions of
children's lives if we strengthen our efforts for all children”.
The
simple solutions with strong economic impact, contributing significantly to
reduction of mortality rate among children under the age of five include
prenatal care, reproductive care and after birth , breastfeeding mothers,
vaccinations, insect nets distribution, improve water supplies, sanitation and
oral rehydration therapy against diarrhea, antibiotic against pneumonia,
nutritional supplements and physical food …
However,
despite the impressive progress, UNICEF’s report still stated that MDG target
of reducing by two thirds the mortality rate among children under 5 years old
at the global level has not been reached.
In
the period from 1990 to the end of 2015, nearly 236 million children died
before the age of five, mainly due to preventable causes. Prematurity,
pneumonia, complications during childbirth, diarrhea and malaria are the
leading causes of death and malnutrition, accounting for nearly half of all
deaths before the age of five in children.
